Rev. Mike Von Behren
Pastor Mike has served Holy Cross Lutheran Church since 2005. Prior to that, Mike served as a vicar of Holy Cross Lutheran Church while he was a student at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. Mike has a passion in ministry for proclaiming God's Word and helping others grow and deepen their faith in Christ through the study of Scripture and service in Christ's church. Mike and his wife Jennifer have two beautiful girls, Micah and Moriah. As a family, they enjoy cool nights camping, steep trails, baseball in any form, and family movie nights.
Worship & Music Director:
Kristin received her theology degree from Whitworth College, where she also earned a Certification for Ministry. After serving for three years as the Director of Children's Ministry at Hope Lutheran Church in West Seattle, she and her husband, Rhian, moved to Spokane in 2007 to be closer to her family and enjoy the quieter pace of country living. They were delighted to become part of the Holy Cross family and Kristin has enjoyed serving the congregation as its Director of Worship and Music. Kristin's "spare time" has grown quite sparse with the wonderful additions of Elizabeth Grace and Claire Joy to the family, but when she does get a few moments, she enjoys long walks, playing the piano, theater, art, a good book, holding her daughter, and playing games.
A retired Principal and Lutheran School teacher, Fred has served our Lord as a Lay Minister since 1987. God has brought him back into service by sharing God’s word with those members who are unable to attend church. He loves camping and thoroughly enjoys watching his four grandchildren grow up as beautiful young Christians (especially when their grandson cuts their lawn!). His mottos to live by are “Love the Lord” and “Catch and Release.”
Mark D. Werfelmann
Mark grew up in Holy Cross where his father served as vacancy pastor in the early 1970s. He was confirmed by his father in 1973 and has been an active member from that time on. A graduate of Eastern Washington University, Mark served in the US Air Force from 1988 to 1994. He returned to Holy Cross and has facilitated LifeLight Bible classes since 1996; sings in the choir; occasionally serves as cantor and liturgist; and is a trained and certified Stephen Minister. In 2004 Mark was elected to the Board of Elders. Mark is currently enrolled in the Leadership Advancement Program (LAP) leading to certification as a Lay Minister in the Northwest District of LCMS. He and Kristine were married in 2002 and are blessed with a healthy and active son, Nathan.
A native of Tacoma and proud graduate of Mount Tahoma High School (before it was relocated and rebuilt), Karen attended Washington State University and received a B.A. in Office Administration. She and husband Tom spent four years in the Washington, DC, area where she worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. After coming to their senses, they job-hunted and relocated to Spokane when Tom was offered a position with the City of Spokane. Karen has been with Holy Cross since May 1996 and currently manages the church office. She has three wonderful children and three amazingly remarkable grandchildren who walk on water. In her spare time she does needlework, reads murder mysteries, and enjoys all things Monty Python.
Susan grew up in a family that moved often, then married a pilot in the Air Force and continued to move often until they finally settled down in Spokane in 2000. She has now lived here longer than anywhere else in her life, so considers herself "from Spokane." Having started her adult life going to Nursing School at the University of Northern Colorado, she decided to stay at home and raise four wonderful and very smart children, even homeschooling them through a part of their lives. She then moved on to teaching preschool for a couple of years before discovering she really enjoys working in a church office with a wonderful group of Christian people. Now, with all of her children out of the house and in college, she is trying to rediscover "free time," her hobby of cross-stitching, and walking the family dogs.
