This month I want to introduce you to a couple of new images that you are likely to see around our congregation. These are expressions of our Mission adopted early this year 2017, Belonging, Believing, and Bearing Fruit in Jesus.
The first image is that of a cord. Stranded and intertwined it has strength. Individually each strand of a chord is significantly weaker, but when the strands are together they have collective integrity. We’ve all tried to use a piece of rope that’s begun to unwind; it’s frustrating. Unless the strands are tightly wound together, the rope looses its usefulness. Galatians 3:28 says, “You are all one in Christ.” The first aspect of our mission is helping people find their belonging in Jesus and in the community of Christ intertwining their lives with the Christian community. It’s invitational and relational.
The second image is the cross. Paul said, “the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18. This is the content of our faith. As believing people we want to grow in this grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ as scripture encourages us to do in 2 Peter 3:18.
The third image is what comes when faith in Jesus is intertwined with the collective strength of Jesus living in and through his people: fruit. A tree bearing fruit is what all of us become. Colossians 1:10 says, “so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work.” What kind of fruit? God’s answer is all encompassing, “every good work.” God produces a variety of work in each of our lives. At Holy Cross the Board of Directors is helping us to bring some focus to which good work we will focus on accomplishing together as they add to this mission a vision statement and some strategic targets for the next five to ten years of our ministry. As those pieces are available we’ll share them with you as well. In the mean time our newsletter lead articles between now and our next congregational meeting in November will each take us deeper into one of the three aspects of this mission: belonging, believing, and bearing fruit.
