This will be the fifth year Cross My Art has returned to the village of Gakona, AK, to lead a four-day-long art camp with the kids of the village and to tell them about our savior Jesus. Each year I and one of my daughters participate in the team (this year Moriah will be coming along). We look for a couple of willing volunteers to come with us June 23-30, 2017, who want to be a part of this fun mission experience.
The trip is a Vacation-Mission, in other words: we don’t fundraise or use church funds to pay for the trip. We simply choose to spend part of our vacation time and vacation money serving the Lord in Alaska.
Because it’s a Vacation-Mission, you are free to vacation as well while you are there. Those who come will meet up for a team meeting in Anchorage on Saturday with Alaska Mission for Christ (AMC), for worship Sunday at Mount Drum Lutheran Church in Copper Center, and for ministry in the village for about four or five hours each day Monday-Thursday. The rest of the time before, after, and during the week is yours to explore. Add time on the front or end of the trip to sightsee in other areas of our nation’s largest and most scenic state.
While there Moriah and I will be staying in a tent outside Mt. Drum Lutheran Church alongside the mighty Copper River. You may tent as well for free or camp out on the floor of the church building. However, you may set up your own accommodations in Glenn Allen or Copper Center, anything from a basic hotel, to a cabin in the woods, to a week’s stay at the luxurious Princess Wilderness Lodge. Since it’s your vacation and your funds, the choice is up to you.
Moriah and I are comfortable leading the art portion of the camp. What skills do we need from those interested in coming with us? We’re looking for people who like to be around kids, kids of all ages from preschool to high school. We’re looking for people who can help set up, clean up, interact with kids, and ask them about their art. We’re looking for people who want to prepare snacks and even meals for the kids at the camp. Most of all, we’re looking for people who love Jesus and want to share his love with kids of native Alaskan culture. And if you happen to love, or have talents in art, that’s great too—but certainly not necessary.
Cross My Art mission funds pay for the art supplies and AMC mission fees. We’ll use Thrivent Action funds to cover the cost of food for the kids at the camp and incidentals relating to it. The remainder of your costs would be covered by you, just as you would do on any other vacation: airfare, transportation, lodging, and meals, etc. What better way to use the gift of vacation time and funds that God has given you than to see his creation while investing yourself in the lives of kids of whom Jesus said, “The kingdom of God belongs to such as these!”
