Many of you have been hearing from Art and me about our adventure helping to finish the building of four houses in Kona, Hawaii, this past November with Habitat for Humanity. During our time in Kona, we learned of a “Blitz Build” planned for this coming September. A Blitz Build means that ten teams meet to build ten houses in ten days! Teams are forming from as far away as Japan! Art will attend leadership training in early March and we are beginning to speak with people who are interested in going to Kona with us next September to be a part of the build team.
One of the important points that we learned while preparing for our first build is that the cost of living in Hawaii is the highest in the nation and single-family home ownership is the lowest, with families frequently working several jobs just to afford to rent their residence. If you have ever enjoyed a trip to Hawaii, you know that goods and services are expensive! For these reasons, there's a dire need for affordable housing in Hawaii, and West Hawaii Habitat for Humanity is working hard to help provide it. The families selected for the houses are in partnership with Habitat and it is a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”
Please begin to pray about whether God is leading you to participate in the Blitz Build with us. We will be glad to share particulars with you, and don’t hesitate to call Art at 509-710-8425. We hope to hold an informational meeting sometime in early spring after Art has completed his training with Thrivent Builds.
In His name,
Mardi and Art Ellwanger
